AXIOM NATURAL RESOURCES PVT LTD has given financial support to the organization for running one crèche Unit at Oraghat, Koida, Sundergarh. There are 25 children were admitted in this centre and 2 Nos. of aya’s appointed for the children. Regularly health check up camps were organized for the children.

Disability being one of the sectors of intervention PCSW is devising Micro programmes for the Persons with disabilities in its operational areas so as to ensure better information and guidance services for them. Under this activity the PWDs are being organized and educated on different schemes and facilities for re-habilitation of PWDs. During the year under report fourteen village level meetings are conducted on prevention, treatment and rehalibilitation of disabled in Jatni, Begunia, Nuapara, and Nabarangpur.

Promoting effective measures for prevention of disabilities and handicapped and the realization of the goals of “Full participation of the disable persons in social life and development and of equality” is the objective of the programme. This means opportunity equal to those of the whole population and equal share in the improvement in living conditions resulting from social and economic development.

In Bhubaneswar slum and in the project area of Khurda District, PCSW has been doing the job of counseling and referral services for the disabled and has made a preliminary survey on the disabled. The purpose is in different ways, aims at supplementing the Government efforts in the direction by formulating needs, suggesting suitable solutions, sharing of financial and material resources by all sections of the population, not omitting the rural areas of the State which can be of major significance to disabled persons by resulting in expanded community services and improved economic opportunities. PCSW with the three dimensional global objective, viz., Prevention, Rehabilitation, Equalization of Opportunities made its strategy to address the problem by establishing a Vocational Training Centre for the Disabled relating to open up job opportunity and self employment for the disabled and handicapped.

PCSW has always given priority to employment generation, education, and self-employment programs, which helps adult girls and boys as well as rural housewives to upgrade their standard of living. The tortured women and girls rescued by the organization, the young chaps of backward communities of its Nuapada, Nabarangpur and Khurda district project area and members of women self-help groups are the target population for adult education.

Beneficiaries covered

The awful shortage in man and materials in the health sector is well-known. Due to this problem the people, especially in the rural areas do not have access to quality healthcare which most often than not in a shamblance. As the health centers remain close for most of the time during the day, people prefer to suffer from minor ailments rather than to seek treatment which aggravate later. So like every year PCSW organised health check up camps in the rural areas of Kalahandi and Nuapada district. Three Health camps were organised in Komna bock in Nuapada district and two were organised in Salia Sahi and Buddeswari Railway Colony slums of Bhubaneswar city. While people availed free health-check ups in these camps the occasion was utilized to make the people aware regarding the value of keeping good health which is beneficial for them as well as for the entire society.

One the main reasons of high level of Infant Mortality Rate in the state of Orissa is the lack of proper immunization. Despite the fact that Govt. has undertaken several steps to provided free immunization to the children as well as pregnant mothers the same is not being availed off by the people due to ignorance. So the organisation tried to make the people understand the value of immunization and co-ordinated with the local Aanganwadi workers and ANMs to bring the children to the immunization booth for administering the required immunization. PCSW monitored the immunization schedule of children in two Gram Panchayats of Darlipada and Jagamunda in Komna block and regularized all the children who had dropped out of regular immunization schedule. Similarly the organisation also took steps to administering TT to all expectant mothers in the said Gram Panchayats.

Reproductive and Child Health

Distribution of IEC Materials to the core group and non core group people

Provided entrepreneurship training to the rural artisans in Nuapada district of Orissa. The objective of this programme were to train the group leaders regarding group management, to train how to run micro-enterprises independently, to provide basic knowledge of project formulation and management, to train how to mobilize credit from formal financial institutions, to educate them on the opportunities & financial assistance available. This training programme was quite helpful for the group in understanding the current market scenario and motivated them to undertake their activities strictly in a business-like manner. The organisation is working on a continuous basis to improve the overall socio-economic condition of the rural artisans.

Due to the rapid industrialization process, environment has become the main casualty. Massive plantation has been undertaken with the community to protect the environment. In order to create awareness school children are also involved in the programme. The organisation is also undertaking plantation activities to regenerate forests in the district of Nuapada.

It is true that family ties in India are very strong and an overwhelming majority lives with their sons or is supported by them. However, some areas of concern in the situation of older person’s have emerged. Consequently, the position of large number older persons has become vulnerable due to which they cannot take for granted that their children will be able to look after them when they need care in old age. In this context, PCSW has incorporated the concerns of older persons in its programme agenda since inception.

PCSW had organized a couple of programmes like –

• Organizing groups of older persons and providing them facilities of mass health check-up by specialists, experience sharing workshops etc
• Observance of International Elder’s Day
• Seminar on “Elders are Assets of the Society” organized
• A Human Chain was organized with 600 college students to make people aware about their role on Aged Care
• A rally was organized
• Essay and debate competitions among the school and college students on elder issues

The organization is also running an emergency feeding centre at Godfula of Nuapada district in which senior citizens who are facing starvation are given nutrition on an urgent basis. PCSW is running a Day Care Centre at Godfula in which 18 children in the age group of 3 to 9 belonging to the tribal community are provided with Day Care facilities. They are also provided nutritious diet and pre-school education by trained and caring teachers.

PCSW continued its programme on Malaria and Cancer control. The entire Nuapda district is highly Malaria-endemic. Due to lack of awareness the people do not seek early treatment for any suspected cases of malarial fever which proves to be fatal in future. Though several programmes are being implemented at the Govt. as well as non-Govt. level people are not availing of these facilities. So the organisation tried to make the people aware to prevent malarial fever thorough using a mosquito net. At the same time they were urged to seek medical advice in any fever. Because, in these area any fever is a potential case for malarial fever.

Similarly, PCSW continued its programme on awareness on cancer. A early detection of cancer camp was organised at the block headquarters of Komna in Nuapada district. Practicing physicians were invited as resource persons and told the participants what to do in case of suspected cases of cancer.
